FAQ: Should I Move Out During My Remodel?

FAQ: Should I Move Out During My Remodel?

Q: Should I move out while you’re working on my project?

A: Maybe!

Whether you should move out or not during your remodeling project depends on a few factors, such as the type of remodeling project, the location of the remodeling project, and your tolerance for inconvenience. Projects that are in the basement or are contained to a family room, bedroom, or office are much easier to live with while projects that involve multiple rooms or a major kitchen or bathroom remodel can be very difficult to deal with on a daily basis.

It can be a great idea to plan a trip or vacation during your remodel, especially if it’s a smaller project (1 week or less) and then you get to return home to your beautiful new space. We understand that this can be more difficult to do for projects that will last multiple weeks, like kitchens and bathrooms, but it may make sense to plan to get away for the first week of the project. The first week is the “oh shit” week. The space gets torn apart and various teams of tradesmen are constantly coming in and out. There are tools, materials, dust, and people everywhere and your driveway is full of work vehicles. This organized chaos typically only lasts for a week and then things become much less anxiety-inducing.

In addition to saving some of your sanity, moving out during your remodeling project will allow the project to move along faster. If your contractor has the ability to move everything out of their way, store materials on-site, work longer hours, and leave all protective measures in place at the end of each day, your project will cross the finish line A LOT faster!
