Q: Does my project require permits?

A: It depends!

Most municipalities have different regulations regarding what type of work requires a permit. As an interior remodeling company, we can provide some general insight into what does or does not require a permit.

If you’re planning an interior remodeling project that does not affect your home’s exterior, you may not need a permit. The big factor here is structural changes. If you’re tearing down or adding walls, you’ll need a permit. Non-structural changes typically won’t require a permit. Some non- structural changes are listed below, but please keep in mind that depending on your municipality, you may still need a permit in some of these cases.

  • New appliances
  • Replacing cabinetry
  • Replacing countertops
  • Installing new tile
  • Installing new flooring
  • Refinishing old flooring
  • Replacing interior doors
  • Installing interior trim work
  • Interior painting
  • Interior wall repairs
  • Custom carpentry work, such as built-ins, radiator covers, etc.

Another thing that you’ll need to think about is if your remodel will include any utility work. Anything that involves electrical, plumbing, or HVAC will require a permit
