Let’s Talk Basements

Basements are arguably the most versatile space in your home. Use it just for storage? Sure. Make it a home office? Easy. An extra hangout spot for the kids? No problem. Movie theater? Now you’re talking! Basements are incredible because they can be pretty much anything you want them to be! They’re a true bonus space in your home that can be used for pure functionality, pure fun, or somewhere in between.

Truth be told, we haven’t had the opportunity to do any specialty basements such as a movie theater, home gym, in-law quarters, or personal speakeasy. However, we have finished many basements into beautiful living spaces that include bedrooms, TV rooms, hangout spots, full bathrooms, laundry rooms, and storage rooms.

So, what’s the process look like to take your basement to the next level? Just like any other project, we start out with planning! You want to make sure that you’re crystal clear on your vision for your basement. What is the current condition of your basement? What are your “must have’s”? What do you definitely NOT want? What is your budget?

Once you’re dialed in on your vision, it’s time to get the real party started. At this point we figure out who needs to be invited to the party… structural engineers, mechanical engineers, plumbers, electricians, waterproofers, foundation contractors, your township’s building inspector, and so on. It may seem overwhelming at times, but having a crystal-clear vision followed by a thorough scope of work is going to set your basement project up for success!

The planning is the hard part. Now you get to watch your basement transform into your dream space right in front of your eyes!

Below are some photos of the biggest basement we have done so far. We completed this project in 2020. The goal for this completely unfinished space was to make it as functional as possible for a large family. This basement ended up including a TV/hangout space, laundry room, storage closet, bedroom, and a full bathroom.

Do you have a big dream for your basement? We’d love to hear about it in the comments!
