Disruption and dust are inevitable during a remodel. It doesn’t matter what room in your home is getting worked on or how many precautions are taken; dust, debris, and dirt from contractors and materials will work its way into your home. However, with proper preparation, getting your home back to normal post-construction doesn’t have to be a major project of its own. Read on to find out some tips and tricks on how to keep the mess to a minimum! (OR scroll down to the bottom to see how all of this can be avoided!)
Clear Out All Areas (Where You Can)
First things first, you’ll want to remove EVERYTHING from the room that is being remodeled. Then, try your best to remove everything you can from all areas adjacent to the space that is being remodeled. For example, if your kitchen is being remodeled and your dining room is right next to the kitchen, you should consider removing as much as you can from the dining room. It might seem like a bit of work to box up an entire room, but it’s nothing compared to the hassle of having to meticulously clean every little thing. Try and remove everything you can near the work area, especially the small stuff such as pictures, decorations, and knick-knacks. If you have large pieces of furniture that can’t be easily moved, cover them from top to bottom with plastic to keep debris out. Store items in boxes or plastic containers with tight tops to keep them safe from dust and dirt.
Contractor’s Duties
Most contractors will take preventative measures to help keep dust and debris out of the parts of your home that aren’t being remodeled. They should create their own dust-barriers and protect your flooring.
Daily Cleaning
Once your contractor’s day is done, they’ll do their best to organize their tools and materials, but most likely won’t spend the time to sweep and dust. If you choose to do this each day after your contractor is done, you can stay ahead of having to clean up a major mess once the project is over.
Open Your Windows
If weather permits, keep windows open to help air out your home, especially the area that is being renovated.
Change Your Filters
If your HVAC is running during the remodel, dust and debris will enter the system. You’ll want to make sure to change your air filter at the end of every week to make sure that your HVAC system and your family can breathe properly.
Hire a Cleaning Company
There are dozens of local housecleaning companies that offer “Construction Clean Up” as a service. It is more expensive than a standard housecleaning, but it’s totally worth it. They know how to properly clean common construction messes such as grout haze, drywall dust, drywall compound, paint splatters, and more.
